BHMS tour continues

Sept 19th Danny Who? That is right, Danny Benchoff , Newcastle’s latest rookie winner showed the field how to do it Saturday night as he won the winged feature in Tom Farnsworth's borrowed #01 at Newcastle Speedway.

Sept 19th Brent Darrow dusted off his firesuit and put on a wingless driving clinic as he captured the second feature of Saturday night in his brother Eric’s #8D machine.

Larry "The Outlaw" Reub showed the field how NOT to do it as his steering broke on the backstretch and he drove off corner 3 landing hard and flipping end over end. He climbed from the car sore, and shaken, but not stirred.

Sept 12th Rookie standout Anthony “Homeskillet” Farnsworth captured both the winged and the wingless features of Saturday night. After winning the BHMST point championship and the Newcastle Point championship, and probably Rookie of the Year, he will most definitely have a bounty on his head soon……. WOW, what a year.

Henning Takes Turkey Day!

Henning Takes Turkey Day!

9/21/2009

Dan Henning chewed off a chunk of Turkey this past weekend! Dan Henning owner of LND wings took the drive to NCS for the final night of 2009 Miniakota racing. $500 went to his pocket as he locked down his 1st victory of the season. Henning was challenged hard by Brunson Behning before contact between the two left the #37 machine sidelined and Henning unchallenged for the remainder of the circuit. Thanks all who attended the Miniakota Turkey Day celebrations. We are already looking forward to next season.

With the closing of the 2009 Miniakota Microsprints season we look back at an incredible year of growth. We saw the best car counts in our clubs history. We were finally able to establish a “local” race scene. Including Co-sanctioned traveling events we hosted/raced with over 200 competitors in 2009. We renewed a friendship with the BHMS tour racing 4 times together creating many great stories. We are committed to helping the BHMS as both our groups continue to grow together. We had 13 different drivers visit victory lane during our 20 show season. The Miniakota traveling series stretched itself to 10 tracks strong. We have narrowed the selection of track favorites to a smaller list and look forward to more growth and stability at these venues. We have already picked up several sponsors for the 2010 season giving us a incredible foundation to grow and establish shows worth coming to. We introduced several new drivers to the sport as our 2009 Rookie honors went to Dan”Wallbanger”Doyscher. Dan Battled through Rookie trials and tribulations all season long but did not give up his quest for consistent laps. Young Jordan Nordstrom picked up the Most Improved driver award as he finally found his checkers. Tim Ottenbacher received the MVD award racking up 5 Miniakota feature wins. We thank all competitors that traveled to visit our racing series. Without members that are willing to travel and friends that are willing to visit, the racing quickly becomes pointless as we have witnessed. We thank all the tracks and sponsors that made the great pay possible for our friends to visit and our club to grow. We will have our Miniakota offseason Round table meeting at the 212 bar and grill in Brandon SD at a later date.

BHMST Point Championship Night

BHMST Point Championship Night

9/1/2009

The last scheduled Black Hills Mini Sprint Tour event of the year, a beautiful cool evening in Sturgis with no chance of rain, and the BHMST point championship to be decided with 5 drivers within 20 points of the leader…. where else would you want to be. The racing started off without a hiccup with Lany Reber, Jeff Mount, Dave Muller, and Doug McIntosh taking their heat races. For the feature “Super” Dave Muller #15 came out of semi-retirement and put on a driving clinic, starting with the pole position in hand and didn’t make a mistake the whole race as he lead from the drop of the green flag to the checkered flag. Robert Bandy in his #27 “Shark-mobile” made a valiant charge for the lead but came up a little short. Lany Reber #24, Larry Reub #59, and Doug McIntosh #23 rounded out the top 5.

….. and that was not all, with what seems to be commonplace this year with the Tour, the “gang” took off the wings and went at it again. A slick one-grove track and no added downforce made for plenty of bumping and banging. At the drop of the green flag, Lany Reber took the point and lead for the first fistful of laps till Doug Napier in his RAACE Foundation #3D drove from the 6th starting position and took the lead when Lany slid up the track and left just enough room for a nose. Napier and Reber left the rest of the field till slower lapped traffic bunched up the field again. With a couple of laps left, Jeff Mount #39 made a daring outside pass for the lead and went on to win his third feature of the year. Reber also made a last corner pass to capture second with Napier, Muller, and Bandy finishing out the top 5.

….. Oh, and did we mention there was a point championship at stake? Congratulations to #10 Anthony “Home-Skillet” Farnsworth of Newcastle WY who held on to win the BHMST Point Championship. This combined with his Newcastle Speedway Championship and the fact that he is a rookie to the mini sprint division makes ya’ wonder what they put in the water in Newcastle. Way to go Home-Skillet!

Wesley Huisman Memorial

After a early rain out at Rapid speedway, we lost several cars that would have created a B-main. The remaining 14 competitors found Husets Speedway in Brandon SD a suitable place so salvage the weekend. The nights racing action went down flawlessly as the Miniakota Microsprints along with help from our friends with the BHMST created a frenzy in the pits after the show. It was a blast watching the people from the stands run by the 360 sprint cars and huddle around our 600s. It was great exposure and we look forward to returning to the high banks of Husets.

We have one more big weekend planned as we are putting together a Saturday show at Worthington & Raceway park in Sioux City. This will be our season Championship weekend & will also host another round of incredible Miniakota Pay!

Ben Wood once again showed he could step up against the best in the Midwest as he came from the tale end of his heat race to win by a comfortable lead. Ben has had a string of bad luck and after a long weekend of travel it had finally turned around. The number 1 pill was pulled and this set the 11b on the front row starting spot. Ben would lead every lap of the A main. Cody ledger was scheduled to start front row outside but a stoppage during a opening circuit yellow would send him to the tale of the field before the race was underway. The only real challengers to Woods performance would be Jess Island of Rapid City SD. Jess would hold the gap between Wood from the start even when traffic was thick, but would ultimately never get a chance at the lead. The 11c of Wade Huisman was steady for 3rd before a fuel delivery issue left him sidelined to the infield. Young standout Devin Huff from Nixa Mo started dead last in the feature after a incident in his heat race left him Sidelined. He and Cody Ledger would impressively work through the field and settle in for 3rd and 4th places respectively. Tim Ottenbacher & Anthony Farnsworth would battle closely with Ottenbacher prevailing for the 5th spot. We appreciate everyone for coming down and visiting us for the 3rd Annual Wes Huisman Memorial.

Miniakota Role into the Black hills.

First I wish to thank Everyone from the Black Hills Minisprint group for allowing us to come run and make the rules provisions necessary to do so. We cant say enough how much fun we had and how great of tracks you have. The racing was great & the company was better.

Night One- Sturgis SD
After a withstanding a late thunderstorm storm with heavy rain, large hail, and high winds, (frogs, locusts, gnats, boils, flies, etc) The BHMST/Miniakota joint event beat the odds and got the track back in shape to go racing. The heat races were a little sloppy but the features were very fast and full of action. Tim Ottenbacher from Hospers, Ia. Would start 3rd row inside and work his way to the front As Jess Island would follow. Ottenbacher would battle with Anthony Farnsworth from Newcastle WY for a number of Laps. Anthony Farnsworth had out raced Ottenbacher in the nights earlier heats race. Ottenbacher and Island would both find the slick setup for the feature and advance past Anthony for the 1,2,3 finsih. Jeff Mount and Doug Napier would battle hard finishing out the top five.
The B-Main was full of action as Jordan Nordsrom would outlast a number of yellow/red stopage to take the checkers as carnage with both Brooks Garrigan and Tyler Mills getting up-side down in separate incidents. Both drivers were un-injured. All the Miniakota drivers appreciated the efforts in getting the track prepaired to race.

Night 2-Newcastle Wy,
As the Black Hills Mini Sprint Tour “Rumbled” into Newcastle, Wy, so did the rain, but fortunately it was just a quick shower that made for some super-fast racing. With the final scheduled race in Newcastle, there was a tight points battle brewing with hometown rookie Anthony “Home-Skillet” Farnsworth in his #10 leading with a slim lead over the RAACE Foundation’s Doug Napier #3D and the veteran racer #59 Larry “Outlaw” Reub, all within 9 points. Combine that with 21 cars and drivers visiting from Eastern SD, IA, MN, and CO, and the fans sure got a show. After the heat races were over, the points battle didn’t change much, so the drama was carried into the trophy-less dash. On the start, Iowa’s Tim Ottenbacher #32T, starting from the pole, spun his wheels and was tagged from behind by Rapid City’s #39 Jeff Mount, turning him into the field and tagging Doug Napier, sending him into the guard rail and tumbling down the front stretch. Napier climbed from the wreck unharmed, but the car was destroyed for the evening. Larry Reub went on to win the dash with Ottenbacher putting up the only challenge.
The night’s feature event was fast and exciting with #2 Jess Island from Rapid City taking the win, Friday night’s Sturgis winner Tim Ottenbacher finishing second, Jeff Mount took third with Miniakota Standout Jordan Nordsrom pulling a splended slide job on #24 Lany Reber for forth fifth spots. Anthony Farnsworth battled through the pack to finish seventh, which guaranteed him the BHMST Newcastle Speedway Point Championship.

Nonwing slide Job action was once again in play as a quick show got us out at around 8:30pm. Tim Ottenbacher took home another well earned victory as it took him all but 3 laps of the feature to find his first NW victory of the year. Youngster Jordan Nordstrom Held off the 32t for most of the race until Ottenbacher found the top side of the track and made the Pass. Nordstrom would not be had again as he yelled off the 11c to the line for a close 2nd & 3rd finish. Kris Wilke would battle for a solid fourth place as #9 Dan Doyscher would settle for a top 5 as his new powri plant would not perform. The Miniakota Microsprints next event will be In Sturgis SD on the 7th during the rally.

First time winners shine in Newcastle

First time winners shine in Newcastle

7/20/2009

A fast track and a good car count made for some great racing on Saturday night. In the first feature of the evening, hometown hero and rookie Anthony “Home-Skillet” Farnsworth outshined the field for his first feature win of the year. Rookie Danny Benchoff piloting Tom Farnsworth #01 machine held the lead for a good portion of the race until he slid up the track just enough for Farnsworth and Rookie Jason Dean in his #00 to make their move on the inside. Anthony in his #10 has been strong all year, toying with his first win. With #0 Ed Wagoner finishing 4th, the Newcastle drivers made a huge statement in this race finishing in the top 4 spots. The only incident occurred in the opening laps when Rapid City’s Jeff Mount and Jeff Wignall from Alliance, Ne got together on the backstretch knocking Mount’s #39 out of the race. Wignall’s car remained to finish the race, but after inspection in the pits, he was finished for the evening.
After the feature, there was enough time in the evening and enough race left in the drivers to take off the wings, invert the start from the feature, and “run-em again”. After multiple cautions for spins and accidents, Veteran racer Troy Corneliuson in his familiar #4c controlled the race and ended up with the win for the first time this season. Larry “The Outlaw” Reub made a valiant effort from the middle of the pack, but ended up one spot short, while Lany Reber, Scott Hudson, and Anthony Farnsworth finished out the top 5 places.
Because of Farnsworth’s strong showing this weekend, he took over the lead in the points chase from Doug Napier for both the BHMST and Newcastle Speedway, with Larry Reub right on their tails.
The next event for the Black Hills Mini Sprint Tour will be a 2 day show starting with a visit to the J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Short Track in Sturgis, SD Friday Aug. 7th during the Sturgis Bike Rally, then back to Newcastle Speedway on Saturday the 8th.
